The road to death is the road formerly taken by cars that connects La Paz to Coroico. It's vertiginous because it follows very closely a ravine of about 400 meters. It's a dirt road, and in the last years of use, there were about 500 deaths a
year, which owes its nicknames of "Death Road" and "most
dangerous road of the world". A new road has been built with tar and less rugged. Nowadays, only mountain bikes, tourist buses and few inhabitants take it the death road.
We decided to go there with an excursion and not with our bikes to avoid any
risk in transport, to be pampered and to have a front fork suspension!
We are a group of three tourists, with a guide and a driver. The guide makes us swear an oath: if we die or if we have an accident, we won't say that it's the guide's fault. Very reassuring... We start at the top, on the tar. The guide goes slowly because there is a little bit of traffic. But quickly we tart with the dirt road and it's exhilarating. At first, we look a little the ravine, but after a little while we leave the brakes and take a lot of fun going downhill. We forget a little to look at the landscape. We arrive after 5 hours of descent and photo breaks at a hotel for a good lunch and a shower. We then go back by minibus by the paved road.
On Saturday, Floriane is (still) sick. We go to a health center. This is an intestinal infection. Despite the strong med cocktail given by the doctor, Floriane isn't restored on Sunday, it's even worse. We stay one more night. On Monday, motivated and sure of us, we put the alarm clock at 6:30 to leave La Paz. Floriane's head is spinning, we won't go today. All this time, we're still hosted by our warmshowers, who are on weekends, and have left us both in their home. The state of Floriane is improving, we should leave tomorrow morning.
Most of the photos of the death road were taken by the guide and are on a CD that we cannot read from our computer, we'll add them later.
